Meet Miss April 2013!

Editor’s Note:  The USDA NASS found Lucky 3 Farm from one of Traci’s guest posts on The Sweet Potato!  If you are interested in guest posting, please email Anna MacDonald Dobbs, anna@carolinafarmstewards.org.

The calendar promotes the 2012 Census of Agriculture.  Farmers, make sure you are counted!  The response deadline is February 4, 2013.

Well you could have knocked me over with a feather a few months ago when the USDA National Agricultural Statistic Service emailed us and asked if they could use one of our farm photos for their calendar!

It took me about a nanosecond to respond YES! How cool is that? Little ole us featured in a national calendar!!

So…we are pleased to reveal Lucky 3 Farm’s Miss April 2013! (otherwise known as Rachel Nachtrab).

We’re thrilled! Rachel not so much. She said “Couldn’t they have picked a better photo of me?!” Sounds just like a woman.

Now we’re gonna picture you to death! (Cuz we’re about to bust with pride!)

So there you go. We have a calendar pinup girl in the family now.

And Rachel, here you go…a “good” photo of you for all of the world to see:

It was a typical day on the farm. Lots of things on our to-do list that we steadily checked off during the day.

The buffet is back! The cow buffet, that is. If you’ve been following our blog here at Lucky 3 Farm, you’ll remember the cow buffet from last year. While our pastures are growing and becoming lush in the warm spring weather, we chop fresh grass from fields across the crick (creek for those of you not fluent in Southern) and bring it to the cows every day. We don’t want the cows on those tender pastures just yet.

So it’s like a buffet for cows! They really enjoy it, to say the least. I mean, hey, wouldn’t you?

The cows with the white faces turn green for a while. Amusing to us. I know – it doesn’t take much to amuse us.

There’s something almost hypnotic about watching them enjoy that delicious fresh grass. We could watch them for hours. Very peaceful.

Why should you never iron a 4-leaf clover?

You don’t want to press your luck.

Hiya all ye wee green folk! I’m Traci Nachtrab with Lucky 3 Farm in Louisburg, NC. Yep, Lucky 3 Farm. Emphasis on lucky. So I think that makes me uniquely qualified to bring this St. Patrick’s Day greeting to all of you.

Here are some Irish sayings that will make you giggle:

of a coarse, ill-mannered person using poor language
What would you expect out of a pig but a grunt?

of very bad music
Aw, that’s the tune the old cow died of.

of paying too much for a cow
He bought every hair in her tail.

of an unfortunate one
He is always in the field when luck is on the road.
